Answers for users and admins

Everything you need to capture, blur and share with Screshot, and to roll it out across your organization.

Getting started

How do I install Screshot?

  1. Open Screshot on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.
  2. Click the puzzle icon in the Chrome toolbar, then the pin next to Screshot so the icon is always visible.

Do I need an account?

Not to capture, blur, copy or download. Screshot works as soon as it is installed. You sign in with Google only when you want to share a link.

Is it free?

Capturing, blurring, annotating, copying and downloading are free for individuals and organizations, and will stay free. Sharing includes 1 GB of encrypted storage per account at no charge.

Capturing

Capture the visible area

Click the Screshot icon or press Ctrl+Shift+S (⌘+Shift+S on Mac). The capture opens in the editor. Drag to keep only part of it, or double-click to keep the whole image. Double-click again to go back to your selection.

Capture a full page

Right-click the Screshot icon and choose Capture full page, or press Alt+Shift+S. Screshot scrolls the page and stitches it into one image, which opens in a new tab where you can copy or download it. A progress bar appears at the bottom of the page; press Esc to cancel.

Change the keyboard shortcuts

Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts and set new shortcuts for Screshot.

Editing & blurring

Which tools are available?

Crop, blur, pencil, line, arrow, rectangle, ellipse, highlighter and text, with a color picker and undo/redo. See all editor shortcuts.

Blur sensitive information

Select the blur tool (eye icon, or Ctrl+Alt+B) and drag over the area to hide. The original pixels are discarded, so blurred text cannot be recovered from the exported image.

Change brush or text size

With a drawing tool selected, scroll the mouse wheel over the image. Hold Shift to change it faster.

Saving & sharing

Copy to the clipboard

Click Copy (or press Ctrl+Alt+C in the editor), then paste into Slack, Teams, Jira, email or any document.

Download a file

Click Download (or press Ctrl+Alt+S). The image is saved as a PNG in your Downloads folder.

Where are my screenshots stored?

On your device, wherever you copy or download them. Screshot does not keep a copy, and closing the editor tab discards anything you did not save. Only screenshots you share are stored in your Screshot account, end-to-end encrypted, until you delete them.

Share a screenshot as a link

  1. In the editor, click Share. The first time, sign in with Google and set up encryption (see below).
  2. Screshot encrypts the screenshot on your device and uploads it. The link is copied when it's ready.
  3. Choose who can view it: Only me (the default), Invited people or Anyone with the link. You can change this at any time, without uploading again.

Accounts & encryption

How do I sign in?

With your Google account, from the extension's Share button or on screshot.com. Signing in on one also signs in the other, and signing out of either signs out of both.

Set up encryption

The first time you share, Screshot creates your encryption keys in your browser. You protect them with a passkey (fingerprint, face or device PIN) and a 25-character recovery code. Save the recovery code somewhere safe, such as a password manager: it is shown only once.

Unlock on another computer

Open your screenshots and unlock with a passkey, or enter your recovery code. You can add more passkeys and make a new recovery code in Settings. Lock this browser forgets the key on that device.

I lost my passkey and my recovery code

Your shared screenshots are end-to-end encrypted, and we never have the key, so nobody can open them again, including us. You can still delete them or your account. If you still have one of the two, make a new recovery code or add a passkey in Settings right away.

Invite people

Choose Invited people and enter their email addresses. They get an email and open the screenshot after signing in. If they haven't set up encryption yet, their invite waits and their key is added the next time you use Screshot. Remove someone and the link stops working for them on their next open.

Can Screshot see my shared screenshots?

No. Images and thumbnails are encrypted before upload, and keys are only ever stored encrypted. We can see details such as titles, sizes and invited emails. See the security overview.

Delete a screenshot

Move it to the Trash from your dashboard. You can restore it for 30 days; after that it is erased. Use Delete forever in the Trash to erase it at once from our database and storage.

Download my data or delete my account

Both are in Settings. Deleting your account erases your screenshots, keys and sign-ins at once.

For IT administrators

Deploy to all users

Force-install Screshot with the Google Admin console, Intune, Group Policy or a Mac configuration profile. Step-by-step instructions are in the deployment guide.

What data does Screshot access?

Only the tab a user chooses to capture, at the moment they capture it. The security overview lists every permission and explains the data flow.

Do force-installed users see a welcome tab?

No. The welcome page only opens after a manual install.

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens when I click the icon

Chrome does not allow extensions to capture its own pages, such as chrome:// settings, the Chrome Web Store or the new tab page. Open a regular website and try again.

The full-page capture looks wrong

Some pages scroll inside an inner panel rather than the whole window (for example web mail or chat apps). Screshot captures the window's scroll, so on those pages only the visible area is captured. Pages with content that loads while scrolling may need a second capture.

Copy to clipboard fails

Very long full-page images can exceed what the clipboard accepts. Use Download instead.

How do I update Screshot?

Chrome updates extensions automatically. To check right away, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode and click Update.
