How to use Screshot

Capture a page, hide what's private, point at what matters and share it with only the right people. Here's everything, step by step.

Quick start

Your first screenshot in under a minute

  1. Capture

    01

Click the icon or press Ctrl+Shift+S

  2. Select and edit

    02

Drag over what matters, blur what's private, point at the problem

  3. Copy or download

    03

Paste it anywhere, or save a PNG

  4. Or share privately

    04

An end-to-end encrypted link only the people you choose can open

Step 1

Install and pin

Add Screshot from the Chrome Web Store, then pin it so it's always one click away.

  • Click the puzzle icon at the right of Chrome's toolbar and pin Screshot.
  • No account needed: capture, blur, copy and download work right away.
  • Rolling it out to a team? IT can install it for everyone: deployment guide.

Step 2

Capture the area or the whole page

Click the Screshot icon or press Ctrl+Shift+S. The page dims and Screshot asks you to select an area.

  • Drag over the part you need. Double-click to keep everything; double-click again to go back to your selection.
  • For a page longer than your screen, right-click the icon and choose Capture full page, or press Alt+Shift+S. Press Esc to stop.
  • Only the tab you capture is read, and only when you ask.

Step 3

Blur and annotate

The toolbar appears as soon as you've selected. Hide what's private first, then point at the problem.

  • Blur (Ctrl+Alt+B) replaces the original pixels instead of covering them. Blur emails, names, tokens and card numbers. For very short text, blur a wider area.
  • Arrows, lines, boxes, ellipses, pencil, highlighter and text, in any color.
  • Scroll the mouse wheel to change the brush or text size (hold Shift for bigger steps). Undo and redo as much as you like.
  • Drag the toolbar by its handle if it covers something.

Step 4

Copy or download

Most of the time, this is where you stop: paste the screenshot where your team already talks.

  • Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste into your chat, email or ticket.
  • Download (Ctrl+S) saves a PNG at full resolution.
  • Full-page captures open in their own tab, with the same Copy, Download and Share buttons. They can't be blurred yet, so Share sends the whole page as captured.
  • Nothing is uploaded when you copy or download.

Step 5

Share privately with a link

When a paste isn't enough, click Share. The screenshot is encrypted on your computer before anything is uploaded, and the link is copied for you.

  • The first time, sign in with Google and turn on encryption with a passkey (fingerprint, face or device PIN) and a recovery code.
  • Screshot stores the image encrypted. The key goes to the people you choose, never to us.
  • From the editor, only the cropped, blurred image you see is shared, never the original capture.
Keep your recovery code somewhere safe. It unlocks your screenshots on a new device. Nobody can reset it for you, Screshot included.

Step 6

Choose who can view

Every new link starts as Only me. Change it in the Share panel or on your dashboard at any time, without uploading again.

Only me

Default

The default for every new link. Only your own key opens it.

Invited people

Each person you invite gets their own copy of the key, so only they can open it.

Workspace

Each member of your team gets their own copy of the key. Leave the team and you lose access.

Anyone with the link

The key travels in the link itself, after the #. Browsers never send that part to us. Anyone who gets the link can open it.

  • Invite people by name or email. They need a Screshot account to open it.
  • Remove someone, or make the link private, and it stops working for them the next time it's opened.

Step 7

Talk about it, privately

Everyone who can open a shared screenshot can comment on it, right next to the image.

  • Reply to a comment to keep the conversation in one thread.
  • Type @ to mention someone, and they get an email. Mentions work for Invited people and Workspace screenshots.
  • New comments appear live, without reloading.
  • Comments are end-to-end encrypted with the screenshot, so only people who can open it can read them.

Step 8

Work as a team

A workspace is your team in Screshot. Share with everyone in it in one click.

  • Create one on the Workspaces page and invite teammates who have a Screshot account.
  • Owners and admins manage who's in. Anyone who leaves loses access to the team's screenshots.
  • In the Share panel, choose Workspace and pick the team. You can belong to several teams.

Troubleshooting

Something not working?

Nothing happens when I press the shortcut

Another extension or app may be using the same keys. Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts and pick different ones for Screshot. Clicking the Screshot icon always works.

Why can't I capture this page?

Chrome doesn't let any extension capture its own pages (addresses starting with chrome://) or the Chrome Web Store. Every other website works.

How do I capture a page longer than my screen?

Right-click the Screshot icon and choose Capture full page, or press Alt+Shift+S (Mac: Option+Shift+S). Screshot scrolls for you and opens one tall image with Copy, Download and Share.

Where are the screenshots I shared?

On your dashboard: rename them, change who can view, or move them to the trash (you can restore them from there).

I lost my recovery code

If you can still unlock with a passkey, open Settings and make a new recovery code; the old one stops working. Without a passkey or a recovery code, nobody can open your encrypted screenshots, Screshot included. That's what end-to-end encryption means.
